Groundhog Predators

Groundhog Predators

Groundhog, (Marmota monax), also called woodchuck, one of 14 species of marmots (Marmota), considered essentially a goliath North American ground squirrel. Classified as a marmot, the groundhog is a member of the squirrel family, Sciurida.

Groundhogs are rodents and herbivores. Since they feed on vegetables, trees, grasses, and herbs, a groundhog can single-handedly annihilate a whole garden. They can also harm and even damage fruit trees and decorative bushes by chewing on them. Groundhogs like to tunnel close to the foundation of a house

What animals eat groundhogs?

Groundhogs are innocent and generally peace-lovers. While the groundhog may not threaten your pets, it may be in danger from different predators. Groundhogs are preyed upon by a few animals. Mammalian predators incorporate canids, for example, wolves (Canis lupus), coyotes (C. latrans), dogs (C. familiaris), and foxes; felids, for example, (Lynx canadensis) and bobcats (L. rufus); and black bears (Ursus americanus). Birds of prey and snakes also prey on groundhogs. Read on the article to find out how and why these animals eat groundhogs

Dogs

Small bread dogs can't overpower a groundhog like a large breed. They are also incapable to attack from above and get a decent hang on the groundhog's neck. They are similarly coordinated with the groundhog and must go head to head or nose to nose. Larger-breed dogs may chase and attack a groundhog, and the situation quite often closes badly for the groundhog, even though the dogs can be in danger too. Groundhogs do have large incisors like rodents do, so your dog stands a chance of being bit. A large breed dog will kill a groundhog, and a little pooch most likely wouldn't draw near enough to get bitten.

Birds of prey

Infant and adolescent groundhogs are delicious food for birds of prey; coyotes, bobcats and infrequently foxes will take a stab at capturing groundhogs for lunch. In case you spot groundhogs in your yard or neighborhood, it's likely a decent sign that predators are also nearby.

Coyotes

Coyotes are very deft and will eat pretty much anything including groundhogs. they are profoundly adaptable and live in and around urban communities over the US, semi-bone-dry environments, forested areas, prairies/grasslands, and mountainous areas. Coyotes are around 25-40 lbs.o Other than groundhogs, what coyotes eat include squirrels, rabbits, frogs, gophers, and snakes.

Humans

Aside from being cute and cuddly, they make delicious food as well. Indeed, you heard it right. Groundhogs are edible. Like rabbits and squirrels), whistle-pigs are veggie lovers. Accordingly, their meat, when properly cooked, is very delicious and tender. You can use woodchuck meat in for all intents and recipes calling for little game and in various dishes too.

And the cherry on the cake, their meat doesn’t carry any serious healthrisks as well. Since they live on a plant diet, and cary no perilous diseases for humans. Groundhogs are like a rabbit in taste and are cooked in the same way the rabbits are in most of the recipes.
